An Gaeilge

The Irish language, Gaeilge, is one of the oldest living languages in Europe, spoken for over 2,000 years. It is a beautiful teanga, rich with deep emotional turns of phrase. Most of us aren’t líofa, but almost everyone has the cúpla focal: Dia duit, go raibh maith agat, cupán tae le do thoil, slán, etc.

Ní stopann sé ag cur báistí anseo choíche – It never stops raining

Bhuail mé leis an gcaidreamh. Níl siad ró-olc. – I’ve met the relations. They’re not too bad.

Is tú mo ghrá – You are my love

Is tú mo leathbhádóir – You are my soulmate (literally, "My rowing partner")

Tá mo chroí istigh ionat – My heart is within you

Mo chuisle – My darling (literally, "My pulse")

A stór, mo chroí – Treasure of my heart

Mo shíorghrá – My eternal love

Níl sa saol ach gaoth is toirneach gan tú – Life is only wind and thunder without you

Grá go deo – Love forever

Grá agus sonas – Love and happiness
