It's easy to overlook the beauty of something as simple as a postcard in today’s digital world of emails, texts, and social media. Postcards have, however, grown through time from a way of sharing holiday updates or breathtaking views. Postcards were often vital for lovers separated by distance, to keep love alive in difficult times and at a distance.
The Beginning Point of a Love Story
When the postal services started offering a low-cost means of communication in the late 19th century, postcard sending started becoming a common occurrence. They offered couples who were separated by work, distance, or even war, especially during World War I and II, a quick and affordable way to keep in touch. Postcards were a way for soldiers to send brief but heartfelt message to their loved ones back home. While longer letters had the brunt of their memories, postcards were usually softer and filled with basic words of love or updates about their day.
Love over a distance
Postcards were personal as well as valuable. The person sending the postcards often used the picture on the front of the postcard to reflect their thoughts. Imagine getting a postcard with a stunning view of Paris, and written on the back is, "Counting the days until I can see you again. While this city is beautiful, without you it is nothing’’ That sort of sentiment still melts hearts today.
A Timeless Romantic Symbol
For many couples, postcards have remained their favourite keepsake even as technology has developed. A postcard is a tangible reminder of a moment in time. You may hold it, put it on display, or put it in a drawer and pull out it whenever you need a little bit of nostalgia.
Some couples have even made postcards a part of their routine, sending one each time they travel to put together a collection that follows their love through the places they had visited.
Do Postcards Still Matter?
Sending a postcard takes time, and in the fast-paced digital world of today, that is an act of love in itself. It shows that you stopped to consider someone and thought to do so in a deliberate, long-lasting way.
